The Storage Facilty is used to store items you don't want to carry around in your inventory.

 

Storage Facilities are available in many locations on each planet.

 

Each planet (and sub-planet) has a separate storage facility that can only be accessed when on that planet

 

For example:

Calypso Storage can be accessed anywhere on Calypso, but not while on the asteroid (FOMA-Fortuna) or the space station (Crystal Palace).

FOMA and CP have their own storage facilities.
